Authorization
The European Commission has authorized magnesium L-threonate as a novel food ingredient, following a positive assessment from the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) in March 2024. This approval with data protection for AIDP Inc., enjoying five years of exclusivity for this ingredient until 7/11/2029.
They submitted an application in March 2021 in accordance with Article 10 of Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. Subsequently, EFSA concluded that magnesium L-threonate is safe for consumption and serves as a bioavailable source of magnesium.
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2694 which will take effect on 07/11/2024, will allow a dose of 250 mg/day in food supplements for adults, excluding pregnant and lactating women. [1]
This mineral source will have to be added to Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC before it can be used in food supplements.
Health Effects
Magnesium L-threonate is a mineral salt formed by combining magnesium with L-threonic acid, which is derived from corn. This unique formulation allows it to effectively cross the blood-brain barrier, thereby increasing magnesium levels in the brain, which is crucial for various neurological functions. Research suggests that magnesium L-threonate may enhance cognitive function, alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, and support overall brain health by promoting neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to form new neural connections. It has been shown to increase levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein vital for learning and memory retention. Additionally, magnesium L-threonate plays a role in regulating neurotransmitters like GABA, which helps reduce stress and promote relaxation. Its potential benefits also extend to improving sleep quality and mitigating age-related cognitive decline, making it a promising supplement for maintaining mental well-being as one ages.
