After about 20 months of working and waiting, Food Law Consult could finally deliver the good news to Zenko Superfoods, a Belgian-owned healthy snack company.[1]
On 20 March 2023, the European Commission published the Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/652, authorizing the placing on the market of roasted and popped kernels from the seeds of Euryale ferox Salisb. (‘Makhana’) as a traditional food from a third country.[2]
Makhana is an ancient food sourced from ponds around the Himalayan foothills for over 2000 years. The seeds of the water lily are traditionally harvested, dried, roasted, and popped. These ‘Water Lily Pops’ are seasoned to a light, crunchy snack, similar to popcorn.
